so that brings me to my next question...

if i have askimet and bad behavior running, is it safe to turn off the "must register" to post thing?

Roxanne, I don't require registration, but I don't post comments automatically in the blog for new users. Users have to have at least one previous post approved in order to be trusted, and their next comments will be published automatically. So far it's been working for me great.

It says - I must be logged in to post a comment.

Go to Options => General
unmark Users must be registered and logged in to comment
Then, go to Options => Discussion
OFF An administrator must approve the comment (regardless of any matches below)
ON Comment author must fill out name and e-mail
ON Comment author must have a previously approved comment

Should work after that.

I think it works now. BTW, it shows comments right away to the commenter, but it says that the comment if awaiting for moderation. I opened a different browser that doesn't have your blog's cookies set and it didn't show the comment I posted. So, it works just the way it supposed to. Now, when you approve the comment, I will remember me and I will be able to post without moderation. Usually I can spot right on when people are trying to fool me. If a comment makes sense - I approve and very often people don't include their URLs, and that makes it even easier.
