Trying to Save an Arm, Might Surely Cost you a Leg
This is part of an on-going series concerning acceptance of "the lowest bid" and what you get for the money. More along the lines of "Buyer Beware" or the old adage, "If it's too good to be true, then it probably is." In Interior Design and Construction (or Home Staging) this is consistently true. In this particular case, the Home Owner truly went with the lowest bid; in her own words, "Nobody could touch this Contractors prices". On top of this, she and her husband thought that they would save even more money by acting as their own "contractors" and overseeing the project themselves by NOT hiring a Professional Designer to assist in the process or to oversee the care and maintenance of the home. Now they are truly going to be paying some additional prices.
The above pictures are of the brand new, Versile Travertine tile that was one of the FIRST items that this Contractor installed. However, instead of then taking CARE of the flooring by covering it with either plastic or drop clothes, he left is bare and unprotected for the duration of his crew working in the space. Cement, grout, paint, liquid spills, coffee, a shoe print of who-knows-what all were left to DRY and STAIN the no longer "new" travertine floors. This was not just in one room, but several areas of the entire floor of the home. Unfortunately for this Home Owner, they will most likely need to now pay a substantial sum of money for a Professional Flooring Company to come and strip, clean and reseal these natural stone floors - that is if they were ever sealed to begin with. We have our doubts.
