Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief Act and Debt Cancellation

If you owe a debt to someone else and they cancel or forgive that debt, the canceled amount may be taxable.

The Mortgage Debt Relief Act of 2007 generally allows taxpayers to exclude income from the discharge of debt on their principal residence. Debt reduced through mortgage restructuring, as well as mortgage debt forgiven in connection with a foreclosure, qualifies for the relief.

Zillow Home Price Estimates

The Zillow pro blog has a good post on how they do their home price estimates, and the accuracy of the estimates by market. Here’s the link Skipping to the stats on Phoenix, according to Zillow 83.6% of their estimates are within 20% of the actual sales price transactions, within 10% of the sales prices; 61.7%, and within 5% for just 37.2% of transactions.
